Applicants without prescribed qualifications

If you have teaching experience but do not have the qualifications required for registration you may be able to apply for registration under sections 8(1)(a)(ii) and 9(1)(a)(ii) of the Act.

You will need to demonstrate how your education, demonstrated abilities, experience, knowledge and skills establish that you meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST).

How to apply

This is a complex undertaking with long timeframes.  We strongly recommend that you contact the QCT to discuss a potential application.

To apply, you must submit:

  • an online Application for teacher registration form
  • the signed confirmation page and certified copies of all required documents and
  • a structured professional portfolio.

The portfolio

The portfolio must be presented in the prescribed format, which comprises:

  • a summary of your personal details
  • a summary of your employment history supported by official statements of service
  • a written response to three set tasks designed to demonstrate that you meet the APST
  • two referee reports in the required format.

Applicants with a three-year teaching qualification

In certain cases, experienced teachers who have a recognised three-year teaching qualification may be able to meet the requirements of the APST by means of a Standards assessment form instead of submitting a full structured professional portfolio. This is only applicable if the teaching qualification and experience are first assessed by the QCT as having met all policy criteria.

If you are an experienced teacher with a three-year teaching qualification, please contact the QCT to obtain further information.
