What was it that influenced you to become a teacher? Was it a desire to help, encouragement from an inspirational teacher while you were at school or did you want to make a difference in the lives of children?
To help us answer these questions, we are conducting a large scale survey in partnership with the Learning Sciences Institute of Australia.
In August 2015, we engaged the University of Newcastle to review recent literature on factors that influence the choice of teaching as a career. Now we want to know why Queensland teachers teach.
But why do we want to know?
It’s simple, we’re going to need more teachers. Currently, over 36% of registered teachers in Queensland are over the age of 50.
The QCT is in a unique position to identify and promote strategies that will attract quality teaching candidates to the profession.
Attracting quality candidates to pursue teaching as a career is one means of enhancing the overall quality of teaching, as well as ensuring there are enough teachers now and in the future.
This study will provide us with the information needed to better promote the teaching profession and to ensure those with the most to offer choose teaching as a career.
The survey will be launched in October 2016.
The final report will be available in 2017.
