Who employs teachers?

The QCT does not employ teachers in schools. However, there are a number of institutions that do.

State schools

Application for employment in all state schools is via the Department of Education and Training.

Catholic schools

Catholic schools generally advertise teaching positions in The Courier-Mail and regional newspapers.  You can find general information on employment in the Catholic sector from the Queensland Catholic Education Commission.

Independent schools

Independent schools generally advertise teaching positions in The Courier-Mail and regional newspapers. You can find general information on employment in the independent sector from Independent Schools Queensland.

Kindergarten services

Every Queensland kindergarten service must be a member of one of five central governing bodies, who may be able to assist with employment

Long day care services

Long day care services approved to deliver kindergarten programs in Queensland may deliver teacher-led kindergarten programs. Each service usually advertises teaching positions in The Courier-Mail and regional newspapers.

Other opportunities

You may also seek teaching positions at TAFE

Transitioning to a different area of teaching

A registered teacher can legally be employed to teach any year level in a school.

The school/employer ultimately decides specific subjects, grades or classes assigned to a registered teacher.

However, if you wish to upgrade your skills to transition from primary to secondary teaching or vice versa; or to early childhood teaching, you may find some useful tips in the Transitioning to a different area of teaching fact sheet (PDF, 1502KB).
