Excellence in Teaching

Kate Wilkinson

Kate Wilkinson has instilled entrepreneurial spirits in her students through her dynamic approach to creating authentic, real world learning experiences, including innovative design briefs, industry links and project-based learning opportunities.

A visionary Curriculum Leader at Redeemer Lutheran College in Brisbane’s South, Kate’s Hospitality, Design, Fashion, and Nutrition and Food Technology students tackle real-world problems and develop crucial skills such as resilience, creativity, and critical thinking.

Under her leadership, students have engaged in entrepreneurial projects like regular pop-up stalls and themed events, including ‘Frappe Friday’ and ‘Thirsty Thursday’. These initiatives provide hands-on industry experience for students whilst serving and fundraising for the community.

Her commitment to real-world applications is further evidenced by students participating in international competitions such as the Wool4School fashion design contest, where Redeemer College stood out as the only Queensland school to have multiple finalists.

Kate’s innovative curriculum emphasises collaboration with other subjects. Her work with the creative arts team has been particularly notable, integrating Year 11 and 12 students into the college musical’s costume design process. This project connected students with literature and character development, significantly enhancing their learning experiences.

Kate has championed various community-oriented projects, including the designing, and creating, of original products for charitable causes. Her efforts in supporting staff have been equally impactful, offering empathy and practical assistance during challenging times.

In her nomination, colleagues praised Kate for “inspiring young people to be outward facing citizens that make an impact in the local and global community.”
