As a Deputy Principal at Loreto College Coorparoo and leader of the school’s professional learning program, Lissa Gyte has ensured professional learning is empowering for all colleagues. Contemporary evidence-based research underpins her collegial approach in making teacher learning relevant to all career stages. Her creation of a weekly podcast has also connected past pupils, the school community, and teachers with the school’s work.
Lissa has been teaching for 28 years at schools across Brisbane in different sectors, both in co-education and girls' education. At Loreto College, she has established fortnightly Professional Learning Teams to encourage emerging leaders to run pedagogical Breakspear’s Teaching Sprint workshops. Teachers set their goals in alignment with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, as well as the school’s strategic plan.
The learning environment she has created allows teachers to engage with best-practice educational research and share their knowledge. Her professional learning program was recognised at the 2021 Australian Education Awards with ‘Best Professional Learning Program’ status. She was also recognised last year on The Educator’s Hot List and as one of the Most Influential Educators.
Lissa has shared her thoughts on best practice teaching through a national webinar and is a sought-after panellist for conferences promoting women in leadership. She has also brought her career expertise to a co-research project on the effects of high impact teaching strategies on students’ academic emotions and engagement in class.
Lissa is described as offering unwavering support for both staff and students as they pursue excellence and, despite demonstrating high proficiency as an educator, continues to act with humility. She says teaching keeps her young at heart, as there is laughter to be shared with students and colleagues every day. As someone who is a lifelong learner and optimistic about the future, she said it’s an honour to be able to help students discover their talents and build the self-belief and confidence to pursue their passions.
In her nomination, colleagues wrote:
“Lissa approaches her role as Deputy Principal with positivity, authenticity and courage.”
