Natalie Van Zyl's leadership at Warraber Island Campus, part of Tagai State College, has transformed education in one of Queensland's most remote communities. As Head of Campus, she balances teaching a Kindergarten to Year 1 class, managing a school of 60 students, and pursuing postgraduate Montessori studies - all while fostering a collaborative and culturally responsive school environment.
Natalie's commitment to early childhood education is evident in her creation of the Strait Start Baby class, which supports children aged two months to three years and strengthens family-school connections. Her leadership extends beyond her campus, contributing to curriculum alignment and moderation across nine island campuses, ensuring consistency and high standards.
Through partnerships with Torres Strait Rangers and local leaders, Natalie has embedded First Nations knowledge into the curriculum, enriching students' learning experiences. Her strategic approach has also led to a 0% Student Disciplinary Absence rate in 2024 and three consecutive years of 100% positive School Opinion Survey responses.
Natalie's dedication to inclusive education, cultural respect, and professional growth has not only improved outcomes for her students but also strengthened the broader school community. In Term 4 of 2025, Natalie moves to a new Head of Special Education Services role at Waterford West State School.
