Innovation in Teaching

Christopher Wickens

Shailer Park State High School's Christopher Wickens is embedding innovative teaching practices with his focus on connecting classroom learning to real-world applications.

As the school's Innovation Coordinator, one of his most notable achievements is the creation of the Design Skill Tree, a gamified framework that empowers students to track their progress, set personalised goals, and explore learning pathways at their own pace. This approach not only fosters independence but also supports diverse learning needs.

Christopher has also been instrumental in integrating cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and digital prototyping into the curriculum. By doing so, he has enabled students to move beyond theoretical concepts to create tangible, functional prototypes, enhancing their technical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Beyond his classroom, Christopher has led the development of a makerspace at the school, providing staff and students with access to emerging technologies. Through mentoring and professional development, he has inspired colleagues to embrace innovation, embedding a culture of creativity and collaboration across the school community.
