Excellent Leadership in Teaching

Thomas McKenna

Thomas McKenna is dedicated to creating meaningful pathways for students in rural Queensland, making a strong impact across the state and particularly at St George State High School as principal. With more than 20 years of experience in Australia and overseas, Thomas brings both global perspective and local commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by regional schools.

At St George, he established the Agriculture, Water and Environment (AWE) Partnership, connecting students with local industries and government to explore careers in agriculture. Its flagship initiative, the Ag-Careers Immersion Camp, has attracted students from across sectors and across Queensland, gaining national recognition for its hands-on, industry-focussed approach. The program supports students to become more industry-ready and has since expanded to include a shearing qualification and a primary program.

Under Thomas' leadership, the school has achieved improved attendance, retention, and Queensland Certificate of Education attainment, and is now recognised as an Agricultural School of Excellence. Schools participating in the Ag-Careers camp also report stronger student engagement and clearer career goals. Thomas' work is valued by students, families, and industry alike because it delivers education that is authentic, future-focused, and grounded in meaningful learning.
