Mark Avery, a dedicated educator at St Ursula's College in Yeppoon, has been recognised for his exceptional contributions to teaching and learning. With 13 years of experience across Queensland schools, including Brisbane Boys Grammar, Rockhampton Girls Grammar and Yeppoon State High School, Mark has consistently demonstrated a commitment to fostering inclusive, innovative, and future-focussed education.
As Library Manager and Head of Social Sciences, Mark has spearheaded transformative initiatives such as the $120,000 redevelopment of the school library into a vibrant, student-centred learning hub. His leadership extends to curriculum innovation, including the introduction of 'Thinking Big' - an interdisciplinary program that challenges Year 9 and 10 students to tackle complex global issues through critical thinking and ethical reasoning.
Mark's passion for truth-telling, reconciliation, and supporting teachers to embed Indigenous perspectives is evident in his work as Co-Chair of the school's Reconciliation Action Plan Committee and his publication, Enemy on their Tracks , which sheds light on the history of First Nations Peoples in Central Queensland. Beyond the classroom, Mark's mentorship of colleagues and his initiatives, such as mock archaeological digs and a Reading Club, have strengthened community connections and inspired a love of learning among students and staff alike.
