Bellbird Park State Secondary College's David Moran has made exceptional contributions to fostering cultural connection and inclusion.
With 30 years teaching experience across multiple countries, David has brought a wealth of knowledge and dedication to his role. His innovative work includes introducing the Yagara language as a curriculum subject, making Bellbird Park the first high school in Queensland to offer this First Nations language. Collaborating closely with local language owners, he co-developed a program that not only teaches the language but also deepens students' understanding of their connection to Yagara Country. His co-creation of Yagara word lists and unique 'Learning Yarns' assessment method has set a new benchmark for culturally responsive teaching.
Beyond this, David coordinates the school's EAL/D program, supporting over 680 students from diverse backgrounds. His efforts include band scaling EAL/D students (with data being used to identify those requiring extra support), engaging families through multilingual correspondence, assisting students with their transition from Milpera State High School to Bellbird Park and facilitating pathways like the UniSQ UNIPREP program.
David's commitment to professional learning and community engagement has left a lasting impact on his students, colleagues, and the broader school community - with his contributions extending to a support role in the Kokoda Walk team and giving neurodivergent students a safe space as coordinator of the Dungeons and Dragons Club.
