Outstanding Contribution to Teaching

Michael Smith

Michael Smith has been a steady and positive influence in preservice teachers’ practicum experiences in Queensland for more than a decade.

As a Deputy Principal at Marsden State High School, his dedication has set a gold standard for teacher placements. Marsden State High is renowned as Queensland's primary hub for teacher practicums, largely due to Michael's visionary leadership. Each year, Marsden accommodates up to 500 student teachers from various universities, a testament to Michael's commitment and organisational prowess.

Michael’s impact is most evident in the structured and high-quality placements Marsden provides. He developed a comprehensive induction program in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) academics, ensuring preservice teachers receive tailored support, and ongoing professional learning. A dedicated 'Praccie Room' facilitates seamless interaction between trainee teachers and academics, further enhancing the learning experience.

His adaptability shines through his collaboration with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to craft unique placement experiences. For instance, Michael tailored placements for Griffith University's Master of Teaching students, customising timetables to align with individual teaching interests and offering exposure to diverse educational settings. This approach has been adopted by other universities, showcasing his commitment to optimising practicum experiences.

Michael’s excellence has garnered numerous accolades, including the QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence and the Commonwealth Bank National Teaching Award. His contributions extend beyond his school role; he actively participates in university committees, mentors preservice teachers, and consults on course development. Notably, he has been involved in several significant initiatives, such as the Queensland Initial Teacher Education Summit and various Department of Education advisory groups.
