As a third-year teacher, Kiana Sloane has made remarkable contributions beyond her classroom. Her commitment to enhancing student learning and fostering environmental stewardship is evident through her leadership in various sustainability initiatives.
Kiana's journey began with a Marine Biology degree and a career at Sea World and Paradise Country, where she developed a deep passion for education. Her rich background in science, conservation, and education has shaped her into a devoted educator committed to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards.
At the heart of her efforts is the Years 3-12 Sustainability Committee. She has transformed the club into a student-driven powerhouse, where older students mentor younger peers, building leadership skills and environmental awareness. Under her guidance, the committee has launched several impactful projects, including a recycling program in partnership with the Nerang Express Recycling Centre, which funnels funds to a Tanzanian school.
A "Naked Food Lunch" is another initiative organised by Kiana. Held biannually, students are encouraged to bring plastic-free lunches. A forthcoming book drop will also allow students to exchange old books, promoting sustainability and resourcefulness.
Kiana has partnered her school with the EcoMarines Program , an educational initiative that immerses students in real-world environmental challenges. Through this program, she helps learners devise solutions to challenges, foster peer education, and connect them with community resources. Annual excursions, such as the EcoMarine Ambassador Training at Tangalooma Island Resort and the Global Link Competition, further enrich students’ learning experiences. Notably, her leadership led to the senior team’s victory in the 2023 Global Link event.
