In only his second year of teaching, Luke Higgins has made a remarkable impact on his students and the school community at Cooktown State School in Far North Queensland.
Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Film and Television as well as Geology, Luke brings a unique blend of creative and scientific expertise to his role. While working in the Queensland mining industry, he honed his skills in communication, leadership, and training – skills he now channels into his teaching.
Known for his boundless enthusiasm and willingness to lend a hand with any task, Luke has introduced several innovative media arts programs to Cooktown State School. Initiatives he has been involved in include a school radio station, photography programs, and hands-on training with new technologies such as editing software and drones. These programs not only spark students’ creativity but also provide them with valuable skills for the future.
Luke has actively engaged with traditional landowners in the community, creating a powerful acknowledgment of Country for the school. This project features breathtaking footage of the local land, sea, and rivers, reminding students of the profound connection to the land on which they live and learn.
Luke’s colleagues say he shows a commitment to students that is unwavering: “As a beginning teacher his ability to give his all to every undertaking both required and acquired is to be admired. He is an asset to the education system and certainly to any school that he works in. I predict Luke will have a long and highly regarded career.”
