A passionate beginning teacher at a high-Indigenous, low-socioeconomic school, Ashley (Ash) Constable has made an impressive impact far beyond his classroom.
Known for his dedication, Ash developed a student engagement program designed to boost attendance and academic outcomes. Identifying low-attending students, he took a hands-on approach by personally meeting them at their homes, walking with them to school, and ensuring they started the day with breakfast.
His program also included a social-emotional session focusing on important values, fostering collaboration, and building connections among students. The results have been remarkable - one student's attendance increased from 30 per cent in 2023 to 93 per cent in 2024 thanks to Ash's efforts. Now, Ash coordinates a team of three staff members to further the program's success.
In addition to his engagement program, Ash reinvigorated school spirit by reintroducing school discos. With a detailed proposal, budget, and timeline, he garnered support from the leadership team, P&C, and community members. His effective marketing and coordination led to a successful event where well over half the school's students participated. The disco not only delighted students but also contributed significantly to the Student Council, creating valuable opportunities for community connection and growth.
Ash's approach to teaching is characterised by his respectful and compassionate connections with students, reinforced by firm and consistent boundaries. His effective classroom and behaviour management strategies have become an inspiration to his colleagues.
Drawing on his experience as a former Cairns Taipans basketball player, Ash embodies discipline and leadership, instilling these values in his students.
