Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Mackenzie Burn

As Deputy Principal at Mitchelton State High School, Mackenzie Burn has made a remarkable impact. Her recognition by the Queensland Principal Association State Council and completion of the Queensland Department of Education Aspiring Principals Program has further highlighted her commitment to educational excellence, leading to her acting in role as Principal of Mitchelton State High School in May 2024.

Mackenzie recently graduated from Queensland University of Technology with a Masters in Educational Leadership. Additionally, her dedication to professional development is evident through her involvement in initiatives including 'Learner First' and collaborations in the Brisbane Metropolitan North Collaborative Learning Communities in English.

Her leadership has reshaped Mitchelton State High School as a top choice for local families, thanks to two key initiatives.

First, Mackenzie innovated the school’s 'On Track for Success' team, a pioneering program linking Junior Secondary teachers with nearby primary schools. Aligning with Education Queensland’s Equity and Excellence strategy, this initiative created a robust professional learning community. Supporting students’ transition from primary to high school, it encourages interschool collaboration and enhances teaching practices through shared expertise.

Second, Mackenzie launched a Student Leadership Program integrating student voices into school decision-making. This initiative empowered students to help shape policies and contributed to their educational journey, fostering an inclusive environment where their opinions are valued. Her leadership extends to innovating the 'Mitchie Matters' advisory group, engaging with parents in strategic decision-making and enhancing school-community communication.

Mackenzie’s leadership has led to an increase in student enrolments by 15 percent, demonstrating growing trust in the school’s reputation. She also established a Junior Secondary Head of Department to manage the expanded student body.
